Katie Horton

Africa Travel Expert

Katie hails from South Africa, and has a real passion for Africa: this vast and diverse continent will always be her first love. She returns several times a year, including to her family’s farm in Great Karoo, which she adores for its tranquillity and beautiful, unspoilt landscapes.

Katie comes to Exsus after spending many years honing her skills at luxury hotels and game reserves in Africa as well as luxury hotels and specialist Africa tour operators in the UK. She has found herself doing everything from accompanying guests on game drives to working as a volunteer with various wildlife conservation projects, such as relocating buffaloes from one game reserve to another.

She particularly enjoys exploring the South African coast, especially along the gorgeous Garden Route. She has also made the most of the vibrant food and drink scene, and highly recommends dining at the restaurant at the top of distinctive hotel The Silo, while taking in the incredible views over Cape Town and Table Mountain.

A travel highlight for Katie has been taking in the wildlife, scenery and culture of Uganda, from tracking gorillas to the friendly welcome from the locals.

A holiday in Africa is synonymous with wildlife, with the Great Migration a definite bucket list experience - one of Katie's most memorable highlights has been watching great herds of wildebeest cross the waters of Kenya in an intense battle for survival against the lurking crocodiles.

My Top Tips

Experience a secluded nature reserve by the coast

I love Grootbos Private Nature Reserve on the South African coastline, where you can enjoy scenic walks, ride horses along the beach and go whale watching and shark diving - a perfect way to get away from it all!

Discover South Africa from Cape to Cape

This holiday offers a classic introduction to South Africa and ticks all the boxes. Explore Cape Town, try fantastic wines in the Winelands, whale watch in Hermanus and spot the famous Big Five on a private game reserve.

The best of Uganda

Tracking gorillas in Uganda is a standout experience for me. Find out about this and more reasons why you should visit this amazing country - from sunset cruises and waterfall hikes to seeing tree-climbing lions - in my blog.

Witness the Great Migration in Kenya

A standout wildlife experience for me is witnessing the Great Migration, one of nature’s biggest spectacles, in the Masai Mara in Kenya, watching herds of wildebeest take the plunge and cross the Mara River to the Serengeti.
