The summer months might be over but don’t discount a summer holiday just yet: September is a fantastic time to travel. If you’re dictated by the school holiday period you’ve still got time to squeeze in a last-minute jaunt, or if you’re fortunate enough to be able to travel after this time you’ll experience optimum conditions without the crowds both in Europe and further afield.
Greek Islands

The ludicrously attractive Greek islands have everything going for them in September, including summer temperatures, balmy waters and fewer crowds. The summer rush has passed in popular holiday hotspots such as Santorini and Crete, meaning more availability at some of the luxurious villas that cling to the clifftops over the sea. For seclusion, Mykonos is the perfect place, with beaches and villages dotted around the island, just waiting to be explored. From there, head over to Naxos for an insight into its eclectic Greek, Roman and Italian history, of which remnants can still be seen in the architecture of its mansions and churches.
France

This gorgeous country is simply beautiful at this time of year. The super yachts are out in force on the bays hugging the glamorous Cote d’Azur, while the cafés that pepper the sun-drenched slopes of Bordeaux and the wine country are cooking up some gourmet delights in the most scenic of settings. September is also a fantastic time to visit the French Alps, which are dotted with remote hiking trails and cycling routes that guide you well away from the beaten track.
USA

The Rockies are a brilliant destination in September as you can take advantage of the beautiful weather as well as the quieter roads and fewer crowds, due to the beginning of the American school term. The abundance of national parks in the Rockies are perfect for a self-drive holiday - weave your way through the spectacular Yellowstone National Park, the USA’s first national park, and see vibrantly-coloured geysers unlike those anywhere else.
Kenya

It’s dry season in Kenya and wildlife-spotting opportunities are at their best: the remarkable wildebeest migration is a pure spectacle in September, when thousands upon thousands of wildebeest, zebras and antelopes cross the rivers of the Masai Mara, where the crocodiles lurk. Book up early though, because this is the big event in the African safari calendar. Combine your safari holiday with a trip to the white sands and laidback vibes of the Kenyan coast, which enjoys a tropical climate and usually remains dry throughout September.
Montenegro

During September, Montenegro enjoys a Mediterranean climate ideal for visiting the sun-soaked coasts as well as going on a cultural exploration of this history-rich country: take in the Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture of small quaint towns set against a backdrop of rugged mountains and serene lakes. Only a couple of hours’ drive from Dubrovnik, Montenegro is also a perfect beginning to a self-drive holiday through Croatia.
