The best places to go on holiday in September
The summer months might be over but don’t discount a summer holiday just yet; September is a fantastic time to travel. If you’re dictated by the school holiday period you’ve still got time to squeeze in a last minute jaunt, or if you’re fortunate enough to be able to travel after this time you’ll experience optimum conditions without the crowds both in Europe and further afield.
The ludicrously attractive Greek Islands have everything going for them in September: summer temperatures, warm waters, fewer crowds and reduced prices. The summer rush has passed in popular holiday hotspots such as Santorini or Crete, meaning more availability at some of the luxurious villas that cling to the cliff tops and gaze out over the sparkling sea.
Like much of the Mediterranean, Spain in September is still experiencing glorious summer weather but without the summer hordes. The sea is at its warmest, having been simmering for months after endless days of sunshine, and beach bars and clubs are still open for business for a few more weeks. You’ll find some of the best and most undiscovered beaches hugging Andalucia's Costa de la Luz, or far north in the Basque Country, where a tapas crawl to try the famous pinchos shouldn’t go amiss.
September in eastern USA is a glorious spectacle: the leaves are beginning to brown as they morph into the famous fall colours, and the trendy cities are gearing up for the new fashion season. Stylish New Yorkers return to their city after a long break in the Hamptons, fresh faced and ready to set the trends for the coming winter season. This time of year is also perfect for hiking and adventure holidays in Yellowstone National Park and the scenically blessed Rocky Mountains.
It’s dry season in Kenya and wildlife spotting opportunities have never been better; the remarkable wildebeest migration is a pure spectacle in September, when thousands upon thousands of wildebeest, zebra and antelope cross the rivers of the Masai Mara, where the crocodiles lurk. Book up early though, because this is the big event in the African safari calendar. Combine your safari holiday with a trip to the white sands and laid back vibes of the Kenyan Coast, which enjoys a tropical climate and usually remains dry throughout September.
It’s finally beginning to cool down in Morocco, making a trekking adventure into the Sahara possible once more. In September, the nomadic Berbers are on the move, migrating back down from the Atlas Mountains before the bitter cold sets in – one of the modern world’s very few remaining examples of a human movement that is dictated solely by nature’s timing. Meanwhile, the colourful souks and medinas of Marrakech and Fes are bursting with character, alive with a heady mix of sweet and spicy aromas that infiltrate the bustling streets of these unmissable destinations.
