Posada Amazonas

The remote Posada Amazonas sits in the Amazon rainforest, and as well as being immersed in the landscape, it is connected to the roots and customs of native culture. It is jointly managed by the indigenous Ese Eja community and the ecotourism company Rainforest Expeditions, a partnership that ensures guests have a truly authentic experience, with the lodge blending native design, customs and cuisine alongside expert expeditions with local guides.

There are 30 bedrooms and suites, with a rustic and earthy aesthetic showcased by natural materials and traditional Ese Eja décor crafted by local artists. Instead of electricity, the rooms are illuminated by candles and lamps, which cast a rosy and romantic glow: but it’s not all about relinquishing mod-cons, as you’ll also find ensuite bathrooms and Wi-Fi – this is Swiss Family Robinson in the 21^st century.

Verandas and private decks open out onto the sights and sounds of the rainforest. Lie in your hammock and watch the wildlife, including squirrel monkeys leaping from tree to tree and vibrant macaws perched on the branches.

The authenticity of the lodge is truly expressed in its food: its casual self-service restaurant showcases Peruvian and indigenous cuisine, serving up pork chops in cocona fruit, cheesy huancaina potatoes, tacachos (made with plantains) and banana cake. For breakfast, tea, coffee, bread rolls and fresh fruit are served for a light and refreshing start to the day.

Few hotels can boost having a 30m canopy tower - climb to the top for exceptional views and up-close contact with monkeys, toucans and macaws. To unwind, head to the spa to indulge in the signature jungle massage, or sit in the relaxation space and read a book from the library.

There’s something for everyone here, with several exciting ways to explore the rainforest, including guided hikes into the heart of the forest and scenic river cruises by day and night – see vibrantly-coloured frogs on giant leaves, jaguars slinking through the undergrowth and families of giant otters and caimans gliding through the water. For those who have an inner Tarzan, you can go paddle-boarding, kayaking and mountain biking.

The guides also offer insightful lectures on the complex ecosystem of the rainforest all around you, and you can also visit the Heritage House museum and head to the Nape Ethnobotanical Centre to hear a local shaman explain the many medicinal uses of the rainforest’s plants.
