2 nightsBELEM

Begin your vacation in the port city of Belem, the gateway to the Amazon, which has an attractive Cidade Velha (old town), including colonial mansions, historic churches and colourful houses. Stroll along mango tree-lined streets, visit interesting museums and dip into the characterful bars - and experience the hustle and bustle of the vast Ver-o-Peso market on the waterfront, which sells fresh fruit, vegetables and fish, as well as arts and crafts. Stay at the Grand Mercure in the heart of the city. The colourful Círio de Nazaré procession, part of an annual religious festival, passes by its doorstep in October.

Nestled in the white sand dunes and aquamarine lagoons of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in north-eastern Brazil, overlooking the beach and the Atlantic Ocean, Atins is a secluded haven – so much so that locals refer to it as ‘the island’. The lagoons and panoramic landscapes are especially popular with kiteboarders. Explore the park on foot, horseback or 4x4 and speedboat, with local expert guides bringing the otherworldly landscapes to life, and spot exotic wildlife such as the scarlet ibis bird. See it all from the air on a scenic flight over the dunes. Stay in a luxury chalet at La Ferme de Georges, a beautiful farm sprawled over several acres on the fringes of the park, where you can enjoy dishes made from fresh homegrown produce, watch the sun set over the dunes, and do some stargazing in the clear night skies.

The Parnaiba river delta is a beautiful ecological sanctuary, with vast swathes of rainforest, mangroves, sand dunes and waterholes covering more than 75 islands, which are populated by a diverse range of wildlife. Enjoy a guided boat tour around the delta, and see crocodiles, monkeys, capybaras, turtles and colourful birds, and go sandboarding down the dunes (the locals call it ‘skibunda’). Your charming hotel here, Casa de Santo Antonio, is in the heart of Parnaiba, a market town on the edge of the delta.

3 nightsJERICOACOARA

Jericoacoara is a seafront village blessed with one of Brazil’s most beautiful beaches on its doorstep, its fine white sand fringed by swaying palm trees (and even the streets are paved with sand here). At your stylish hotel, Essenza, swim in the pool and order a drink at the swim-up bar, or linger in the rooftop Jacuzzi. Further afield, explore around the sand dunes by 4x4 and go windsurfing or kitesurfing, or simply relax on the beach or on the top of a sand dune, and watch the sun set over the sea.
