1 nightBILLINGS

Fly into Denver and catch your connecting flight to Billings, in south Montana. This city will be your gateway to Yellowstone National Park, but first you can relax here before you hit the road the following morning. After a good night’s sleep at Best Western Plus ClockTower Inn downtown, pick up your SUV, pack up your suitcases and begin the first phase of your road trip. As you drive out of Billings towards Yellowstone you’ll hit Beartooth Pass, a winding road cut into the side of the Beartooth Mountains along the Montana-Wyoming border. This is one of the most scenic drives in the US, a long road of switchbacks through the stunning mountain landscape.

3 nightsYELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

After a spectacular three-and-a-half-hour drive from Billings, you’ll arrive in Yellowstone National Park– the first national park in the world. A beautiful landscape of soaring snow-capped peaks, glassy lakes, emerald-green pine trees and steaming-hot vibrantly-coloured geysers, Yellowstone has a wealth of hikes, trails and activities through which you can experience this stunning national park in all its glory. A land relatively untouched, Yellowstone provides a glimpse of how the pioneers might have found this sublime landscape when they first started moving westwards. Now, bison, bears, wolves and elk still roam across the land as they would have done hundreds of years ago. Yellowstone Cabins are located right in the national park and from here you can spend the next three days discovering the sheer magnificence of this vast region.

2 nightsGRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK

After spending three days exploring Yellowstone, drive for a couple of hours down to Jackson, just outside Grand Teton National Park. Here you can rest your feet for two nights at Amangani, the most luxurious five-star resort in the northern national parks. This Aman hotel resides in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Grand Teton National Park and has views across the prairies and mountainous scenery that rolls through western Wyoming. Offering a truly luxurious stay, you can spend your time hiking through the mountains of Grand Teton or simply lounging in the infinity pool overlooking the plains of Wyoming’s Wild West.

1 nightSALT LAKE CITY

After a couple of days in your luxury retreat, climb back in your SUV and drive for about four hours down into Utah to Salt Lake City. This historic city was founded as a centre for Mormonism and today it retains strong links with its past. You’ll spend one night here as a stopover in the Grand America hotel, which has stunning views of the mountains that surround Salt Lake. If you fancy getting out and about, there are many Latter Day Saints sites around the town that you can visit to get a taste of the city’s heritage; Salt Lake Temple is particularly stunning.

2 nightsARCHES NATIONAL PARK

Leaving Salt Lake, drive for three and a half hours eastwards until you reach Moab and Arches National Park. So-named after the amount of naturally-formed archways– numbering over 2000– Arches National Park is a desert region in the east of Utah. The sandstone rock formations have a backdrop of snowy peaks that loom up behind the dusty desert terrain. Sorrel River Ranch is located in Moab, just outside the national park, and is a good base for exploring Arches. You can hike, bike or horse-ride around the national park, whitewater raft or kayak down the Colorado River, or even go on a hot air balloon ride across the Utah plains.

3 nightsDUNTON HOT SPRINGS

A short two-and-a-half-hour drive into Colorado will find you in Dolores and Dunton Hot Springs. Dunton Hot Springs Resort will be your home for the next three nights on the last leg of your trip before you reach Denver. This luxury resort is a blissful place to wind up your trip through the northern national parks, and you’ll have the time to get the most out of this beautiful, romantic lodge, which is based in an old mining town. Here, you can explore the surroundings on horseback or mountain bike, hike around the Rocky Mountains or chill out in the natural hot springs under a blanket of stars. Isolated, but luxurious, Dunton Hot Springs is a stunning retreat.

1 nightDENVER

After three nights unwinding at Dunton Hot Springs, you’ll have to drag yourself away from this beautiful resort in the wilderness of Colorado’s mountains to complete the five-and-a-half-hour journey back to Denver for the last drive of your trip. Once you arrive in Denver you have the night to chill out at the chic Warwick Denver Hotel before your flight home the following day.
