Hotel Overview

sense of place

Dunton River Camp's original farmhouse dates from the late 1800s, surrounded by 500 acres of forest and meadows, where cattle still graze.

rooms at Dunton River Camp

The accommodation at Dunton River Camp takes the form of just a handful of luxurious, safari-style tents, which are all very large and feature modern conveniences – the bathrooms have large bath tubs, hot water and even heated towel rails. The tents are split into Mountain Tents, surrounded by Aspen trees and with stunning views over the El Diente Peak and the Wilson Mountain Range, and River Tents, which sit on the West Fork of the Dolores River, a great spot for fishing.

food & drink

The main lodge has a dining saloon and a wraparound deck for making the most of the stunning views over the mountains. The hotel’s chef is a passionate believer in locally-sourced, organic ingredients – feast on local organic produce and wines from the resort's own farm and vineyard and from around the local area, including fresh chanterelle mushrooms, locally-reared lamb, and a range of great wines.

Meals take place at a central dining table with the kitchen and chef in full view, although private dining is also an option if you wish. Breakfast is easygoing, made when and how you prefer. Lunch can be packed up into a picnic for the adventurous and dinner is accompanied by local Colorado wines.

facilities

After a day’s adventuring in the Colorado countryside, soak in natural hot springs or indulge in holistic therapies in the spa. The camp also has a sauna overlooking the river, which is a wonderful place to relax after a long hike or bike ride.

Activities at Dunton River Camp

Fishing, kayaking, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, or even heli-skiing are all available in the surrounding area. Further afield, explore the majestic Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly (which some say is even more impressive than the Grand Canyon).
