Cancun

2 nightsCANCUN

Your family escape begins in the beach resort of Cancun, famous for its beautiful white beaches and sophisticated hotels and restaurants. One such place is Nizuc, your home for the first two nights of your trip, which is consistently acclaimed as one of the finest hotels in Mexico. Nizuc is just a short drive from the city of Cancun but feels a million miles away, set in tropical gardens with a private white beach on one side and a wildlife-rich mangrove reserve on the other. Active families in particular will love Nizuc, with a wide range of outdoor activities on offer including snorkelling, paddle boarding and kayaking. Alternatively, you can enjoy lazing on the beach, living it up on the hotel’s own yacht, or enjoying Cuban jazz performances back at the hotel in the evenings.

San Jose de Cholul

3 nightsSAN JOSE DE CHOLUL

Your next stop will see you crossing the northern Yucatan peninsula to Hacienda San Jose, around three hours’ drive away. This is a boutique hotel set in a colonial plantation house, which has been restored into a luxurious hotel while remaining steeped in historic character. The star attraction, though, is undoubtedly the nearby ruins of Chichen Itza, the most iconic of all Mexico’s Mayan remains. Also in the area, but far less busy, are the crumbling temples of Tixkokob, while the nearest city, Merida, is home to some beautiful colonial architecture.

Xpu-Ha

HA XPU

Your journey ends back on Mexico’s Caribbean coastline, on the beautiful white beaches of the Riviera Maya. After your exertions tramping through the temples and ruins of the northern Yucatan, this is the perfect place to relax, and your hotel, Esencia, is a beautifully secluded hotel sandwiched between the Yucatan jungle and the unspoilt shores of Xpu-ha. It’s a great place to do little more than chill out on an empty beach, with yoga and meditation classes on offer to help ramp up the relaxation factor. Should you feel like being a little more active, there are yet more beautiful Mayan ruins waiting to be discovered along the coast at Tulum, and magical underwater caves in the Rio Secreto. Kids in particular will love X-Plor, an adventure playground combining jungle zip lining with subterranean river exploration and more.
