Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Elevated 1000m above sea level in the misty Knuckles Mountains and near the city of Kandy, Rangala House affords views of tea estates and mountains as far as the eye can see.

Rooms at Rangala House

Accommodation at Rangala House is spread across 3 bedrooms and a larger studio. The First Bedroom has large bay windows overlooking the mountains, which open out onto the veranda, as does the Third Bedroom. The Second Bedroom offers extra privacy with its own small terrace and shaded garden. The Studio, set away from the main villa, has a private balcony affording stunning mountain views, and has an opulent four-poster bed as well as sleeping another 2, either in a double bed or twin beds. The Studio has a lounge and mini kitchen facilities, and Sri Lankan artworks adorn the walls.

Food and drink

Cuisine at Rangala House makes the most of the produce of this fertile region to offer a variety of Sri Lankan and Western cuisine. Fresh fruits and vegetables and locally reared meat goes into spicy curries and sambals, while a variety of pasta dishes are also on offer. Many vegetables and herbs are grown onsite in the hotel’s own garden. Individual preferences and requirements are discussed in advance with guests. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the local arrack coconut liquor!

Facilities

Rangala House has a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, which is perfect for cooling off and relaxing after a day exploring the tea estates of the surrounding countryside. Children are very welcome at Rangala House, but there are no specific facilities to cater for them; be aware, too, that the hotel’s remote location on a steep hillside means it may not be suitable for younger children.

Activities at Rangala House

Nearby lies the Knuckles Nature Reserve, named for its rows of mountains which resemble a clenched fist. Covered in atmospheric cloud forests, this region harbours a remarkably rich array of flora and fauna, including the purple-faced leaf monkey, wild buffalo, and leopard. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Rangala House is uniquely situated for making the most of the region. The nearby Duckwari Tea Factory also makes for a fascinating trip, to see how your cuppa comes to be – and, naturally, taste it right at the source. Some of the many birds that can be spotted in the surrounding hills include flame minivets, egrets and spotted doves.
