Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Taprobane Island is off the south coast of Sri Lanka, opposite the village of Weligama, and is reached by wading through the sea (but don’t worry, it’s just a short 200-yard walk through shallow water). Alternatively, if you don’t want to get your feet wet, you can make the journey on a sedan chair or an elephant.

Rooms at Taprobane Island

There are just five beautiful bedrooms at this island haven, all with draped four-poster beds, attractive colonial-style furnishings, fresh white terrazzo floors and high wooden ceilings, while the panoramic views over the Indian Ocean are best enjoyed from your private terrace. There are also wraparound verandas and spacious living areas that are ideal for celebrations and gatherings.

Food & drink

After being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves, you can wake up to a breakfast of delicious fresh fruit, including papaya grown on the island. After discussing your menu preferences and visiting the markets, your private chef will create delicious dishes for you, making the most of fresh local produce, including just-caught seafood and flavoursome Sri Lankan curries. Choose one of the many scenic locations on offer to enjoy your meal, and in the evening, sip a cocktail or two as the sun sets over the ocean.

Facilities

This is a perfect place to simply relax and unwind: take a dip in the infinity pool and enjoy the shade of the palm trees. The house is surrounded by cascading terraces overflowing with frangipani, hibiscus, orchids and bougainvillea, with sandy paths through the fragrant flowers to secluded spots.

Activities at Taprobane Island

If you can drag yourself away, Sri Lanka’s south coast is full of riches, and the island isn’t far from the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Galle Fort and Buddhist temples, as well as dense rainforests, lowland tea plantations, wildlife reserves and some of the Indian Ocean’s most beautiful beaches. You can go trekking or mountain biking, or indulge in a range of water sports.

The island is a 4.5-hour drive from Colombo International Airport, or arrive by helicopter in less than an hour.
