Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Surrounded by the lakes and backwaters for which Kerala is famous, Kumarakom Lake Resort is in a beautiful, verdant natural setting. Many of the buildings are literal reconstructions or renovations of centuries-old mansions and retain a traditional style.

Rooms at Kumarakom Lake Resort

The rooms and suites at Kumarakom are characterful and luxurious, housed in faithful reconstructions of 16th-century manas, traditional Keralan bungalow-type dwellings. Presidential Suites feature their own private courtyard and pool, and Heritage Lake View Villas have a plunge pool, a Jacuzzi and sweeping views of Vembanad Lake. Meandering Pool Villas, as the name suggests, are set along a winding waterway to which there is access via private bathing coves.

Food & drink

The Ettukettu restaurant is a huge, atmospheric space with a dark wooden roof and columns, separated by two large courtyards. Commissioned by the 18th-century Keralan king Marthanda Varma, dismantled and relocated to Kumarakom, this is a regal spot where you’ll enjoy rich, authentic Keralan cuisine: Syrian Christian duck roast, karimeen pollichathu (marinated pearl spot fish), appam (a rice and coconut pancake) and duck curry are among the exotic delicacies on offer.

At Vembanad, you can enjoy delicious seafood overlooking the lake of the same name, while Thattukada is the place to go for a traditional cup of chai.

Facilities

At Ayurmana, Kumarakom’s indulgent spa, the ancient power of Ayurveda is delivered in a variety of healing treatments in Nalukettu, a spectacular 200-year-old mansion once home to the renowned Chathamangalathu Mana family of practitioners. Like the Ettukettu restaurant, Nalukettu has been dismantled, moved from its original location, and painstakingly reassembled, piece by piece, at Kumarakom. Treatments on offer include a range of massages, pizhichil oil baths, and ksheera sekham milk treatments.

The resort also has a fully-equipped fitness centre, as well as a beautiful infinity pool which melts into the lake.

Activities at Kumarakom Lake Resort

The beautiful backwaters and characterful towns of Kerala are right on your doorstep, and while it might be difficult to drag yourself away from the resort, it’s definitely worth making the effort. The cultural melting pot that is Cochin, an ancient harbour town with Chinese fishing nets and a vibrant Jewish quarter, makes for a beautiful walking tour.

For a wildlife fix, Periyar National Park is an important tiger sanctuary and is also home to elephants, monkeys, antelopes and many others. Finally, make sure you take a trip on Kerala’s famous backwaters, which are green, serene, and a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
