SLUMDOG MONSOON

Immersive Escape to Mumbai & the Western Ghats

Mumbai & Western India

Duration: 7 nights

Price: From $1,550 per person in low season based on two adults travelling together and including accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis, private transfers, train transportation, experiences as stated and taxes

India’s peak tourist season is the dry season, with many visitors preferring to stay away during the country’s famous monsoon. This isn’t entirely unjustified; in the tropical south and the Himalayan northeast the rains can be truly biblical and render mountain passes dangerous or impassable. In urban hubs like Mumbai, though, life is adapted to deal well with the monsoon, and visiting during this period has its benefits – particularly the lack of crowds and lower prices.
Perfect forThose wanting more of India to themselves, away from the tourist crowds – who don’t mind getting wet.
In the knowVisiting Agra to feast your eyes on the incredible Taj Mahal.

3 nightsMUMBAI

Your journey starts in glamorous Mumbai, the home of Bollywood and the gateway to western India. A city of contradictions, this is home to India’s richest and poorest, opulent homes and hotels like the Taj Palace and Asia’s biggest slum, Dharavi; it’s intense, chaotic and colourful, and a fascinating place to start your exploration of India. In the midst of the skyscrapers and shopping malls, you’ll find things you’d never expect to find in a huge city. Elephanta Island, in the middle of Mumbai Harbour, has rock-cut Shiva temples dating back to 450 AD, and the Sanjay Gandhi National Park is home to deer, monkeys and leopards.

3 nightsLONAVALA

For the next leg of your journey, you’ll board an Indian train – themselves icons of the country – to Lonavala; a journey of a little over 2 hours. A verdant hill station in between the cities of Mumbai and Pune, Lonavala is a riot of green, all thanks to – you guessed it – the monsoon. City dwellers love to flock here in the rainy season, to hike (when the weather allows!) and visit scenic spots like Tiger’s Leap, where a small waterfall forms during the rainy months. Lonavala is also famous for chikki, a hard candy made from groundnuts and jaggery. Your home for 3 nights here is The Machan, a luxurious eco-resort where you’ll stay in beautiful treehouse tents in the forest canopy; at this time of year, clouds hover around the wooden walkways which connect the hotel, making this a truly magical place to be.

1 nightMUMBAI

Your journey ends where it began, in Mumbai. The final leg of your trip is a great time to relax and enjoy the acclaimed restaurants and entertainment that Mumbai has to offer, or to check out some of the cultural and historical sites you may have missed the first time round. This time, you’ll stay in one of the icons of the city, the Taj Mahal Palace, which is India’s most famous hotel and its second-most photographed monument behind the Taj Mahal. An icon of Mumbai and of India’s modern history, it was built in 1903 and was the first hotel in the country to employ women, run on electricity and be cooled by fans – it also acted as a safehouse for fighters in the Indian independence movement. Needless to say, it’s also an opulently luxurious hotel, and a fine place to spend your final night in India.
