3 nightsLISBON

Your Portuguese adventure begins in the capital, Lisbon, where your home for the next three nights will be Hotel Lisboa Plaza. This plush family-run hotel has been welcoming visitors through its doors since the 1950s, and has a prime position for exploring the city's historic and cultural sights.

A great way to dive in to traditional Portuguese culture is by attending a fado show, a form of folk music based around melancholy singing accompanied by guitar riffs. Other sights to make sure you check out during your time in Lisbon include the stunning 16th-century Jeronimo Monastery and the nearby Belem Tower, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

2 nightsPORTO

Having soaked up the rich culture and history of the Portuguese capital, you’ll board a train to one of Europe’s oldest cities, Porto. Home to yet more beautiful medieval architecture, Porto also boasts fantastic food and, most famously, is the home of port wine. You’ll spend two nights in Porto at the grand Infante Sagres, a palatial heritage hotel which fits in well with its historic surroundings in the city centre.

A good place to start your exploration of the city is down the road from the hotel at the Lello Bookshop, a stunning building with stained-glass ceilings and walls covered from top to bottom in ornately carved wooden bookshelves. The Se, meanwhile – the city’s cathedral – is just one of many striking religious buildings in the city, along with the Igreja de Sao Francisco. To sample the region’s famous wine, there’s no end of tastings and tours available showcasing the very best produce from the Douro Valley.

2 nightsDOURO VALLEY

Port wine may give its name to the city of Porto, but its true heartland is the surrounding Douro Valley, the oldest wine-producing region in the world. You will be transferred from the city to the final stop on your journey, the Vintage House Hotel in the town of Pinhao. The hotel is part of the estate of port producers Taylor’s, and it goes without saying that you’ll have no shortage of opportunities to sample the local produce.

The vineyards of Quinta da Roeda lie just a short walk from the hotel, and tasting programmes are a big part of your stay. Complementing the wine, you’ll also enjoy superb Portuguese cuisine at the atmospheric Rabelo Restaurant, which brings together flavours from across the Douro Valley and beyond.

After two nights indulging in the fantastic food and wine of the Douro Valley, your Portuguese adventure reaches its end, and you’ll return to Porto for your flight home.
