Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Lake Moeraki is an area of great natural beauty, even by the standards of the West Coast, and is part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Site, famed for its rich wildlife and abundance of original, prehistoric flora and fauna.

Rooms at Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge

Rooms at the lodge are traditionally stylish and comfortable, with tasteful colour schemes, exposed beams and wood furnishings. All promise stunning views of the beautiful natural world which surrounds you here: Riverview rooms overlook the Moeraki River Rapids and have their own sun decks from which you can take in the view, while Rainforest rooms look out over the West Coast rainforest. Garden rooms overlook the lodge’s beautiful gardens, which are overflowing with tropical plants.

Food and drink

The Riverside Restaurant is a beautiful place to enjoy a meal, with views of the river, the lodge’s manicured lawns and the wild rainforest. You’ll enjoy gourmet cuisine which makes the very best of seasonal local produce, with whitebait from the river, fresh seafood from the coast and game from the forest. West Coast venison, lamb backstrap and New Zealand blue cod all crop up on the ever-changing menu. Accompanying dinner you’ll have the choice of some of New Zealand’s finest wines from the lodge’s extensive cellar, such as Otago Pinot Noir and Hawke’s Bay Syrah.

This, as the name suggests, is a wilderness lodge, and while rooms are very comfortable, the experience of staying here is not about creature comforts; those looking to laze around a pool or enjoy spa treatments should look elsewhere. There is a library where you can curl up with a book and learn about the environment and local history.

Activities at Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge

The lodge is home to a team of expert naturalists, led by the hotel’s founder, who will bring the beautiful landscape to life with guided excursions. Complimentary activities include rainforest hikes, where you’ll learn about thousand-year-old ferns and rich birdlife; ecology guides of the teeming Moeraki River and kayaking trips on Lake Moeraki; and night sky strolls, when the only light other than the stars comes from the glow worms who illuminate the forest canopy. Optional trips include walks along the volcanic coastline, where you can meet the penguins and fur seals who make their homes there.
