Lanjia Lodge

‘Lanjia’ translates as ‘peaceful’ in the language of the local Hmong people, and it’s a fitting name; with mountain countryside as far as the eye can see, and beautiful views over neighbouring Laos and the Mekong Valley, this hotel feels a world away from the chaos of Thailand’s cities.

Rooms are situated in exquisitely crafted bamboo houses, with private balconies overlooking the Mekong River. The style is simple and traditional, with woven bamboo walls and authentic Thai textiles, but rooms are supremely comfortable. Traditional batik weavings decorate the walls and beds, and en-suite bathrooms come equipped with modern conveniences. Mosquito nets are provided.

In keeping with the rest of the hotel, food at Lanjia Lodge is traditionally and authentically Thai, with dishes reflecting the culinary traditions of this part of northern Thailand. All meals are prepared by Hmong and Luan villagers and are served to you on your balcony, overlooking the Mekong River. If you’re on an excursion during the day, you’ll be sent off with a hearty picnic lunch to give you the energy you need.

This being a mountain eco-lodge in the middle of the countryside, there’s no spa, gym or swimming pool; the experience is all about appreciation of nature and local culture. Kids are welcome at Lanjia Lodge, with under-2s staying for free, and under-12s for half the adult rate.

The Hmong and Lahu tribal people who live in the villages near the hotel have a vibrant traditional culture, which you can experience with hiking excursions and activities such as batik (traditional weaving) classes. Local tribal people stage traditional musical performances at the hotel regularly, with villagers directly benefitting from your stay at the hotel through employment and donations from the hotel’s profits. A range of packages are on offer encompassing activities of varying physical difficulty, from scenic mountain drives and relaxing river cruises to strenuous treks through villages, rice fields and mountain paths. This area also offers fantastic opportunities for bird-watching.
