Bunga Raya Island Resort & Spa

Bunga Raya has an idyllic setting on Pulau Gaya (Gaya Island) in Malaysian Borneo, nestled in the rainforest and looking out over the beach and the sea.

Each of the 48 timber villas is totally unique, and they have been painstakingly built by local craftsmen so that they blend with their beautiful natural surroundings. Each one is named after one of the flowers that can be found in the gardens.

Reaching the villas along the canopy walkways through the trees, you can choose one that’s just steps from the beach, or indulge in one with a private plunge pool. Best of all is the feeling of total seclusion. Wake up to the views over the beach and the South China Sea, and listen to the rustlings and chirruping of the surrounding rainforest.

It’s the setting that makes dining so special at Bunga Raya, whether it’s by the pool at the European-style bistro, sitting with the sand between your toes at the beachfront grill, or having an intimate dinner on one of the overwater pavilions.

There's a spa to indulge in, with several treatment rooms and private spa pavilions set into the rainforest landscape. The treatments on offer, including massages, scrubs and facials, blend Asian and western techniques, using indigenous plants and local ingredients, as you relax and listen to the sea and the birds in the surrounding trees.  

Our favourite way to start off the day is with a kayak through the mangroves, or head out with the certified diving instructors or snorkel the beautiful coral reef with one of their underwater cameras. Later on, trek through the jungle in search of the beautiful birdlife, including hornbills, cicadas and colourful butterflies, or experience a thrilling zipline ride through the treetops. Alternatively, take it easy on the pristine beach.
