Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Luang Say Lodge is located in Pakbeng, a small village on the banks of the Mekong midway between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang.

Rooms at Luang Say Lodge

Luang Say’s 20 large bungalow pavilions are beautifully constructed in a traditional Laotian style, from solid teak and rosewood. Bedrooms have high ceilings and huge four-poster beds, with each bungalow affording stunning views over the Mekong. Bungalows are linked to the central restaurant and bar area via a series of picturesque wooden walkways through the hotel’s tropical gardens.

Food and drink

The hotel’s restaurant occupies a beautiful location on a wooden veranda floating above the Mekong River. Breakfast is a hearty affair, with a Continental spread on offer to make sure you start the day off right, while dinner is more authentically Laotian, with a sumptuous offering of traditional dishes provided on a buffet basis. Vegetables are grown either onsite or in local villages, without the use of artificial fertilisers or pesticides. The lodge’s bar is a great place to watch the sun go down over the Mekong with a Beerlao in hand, with a wide-reaching menu of cocktails and wines on offer too. Coffee and tea are provided free of charge throughout your stay.

Facilities

Despite the lodge’s remote riverside location, facilities are in line with modern standards of comfort, with en-suite bathrooms, Western-style toilets and hot water. The Luang Say experience is all about experiencing the Mekong, the lifeblood of Laos, up close, and the company has 3 boats which stop overnight at the lodge and are perfect for exploring the river.

Activities at Luang Say Lodge

Luang Say’s 3 cruise boats travel from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, or vice versa, and stop en route at Luang Say Lodge. The boats are supremely comfortable and offer fantastic opportunities to watch the Mekong go by and learn about the river from a knowledgeable guide. A buffet lunch is provided on board, too. Back at the lodge, dance performances are held in the restaurant area, part of the rich culture of local people who are members of ethnic minorities, with performers including hotel staff, local villagers, and children from the nearby school.
