Hotel Overview

Sense of place

The road leading to Takefue is among the most beautiful in Japan, with the soaring peak of Mount Aso on one side and the ocean on the other. The ryokan is surrounded by bamboo forest which muffles all sounds coming from outside the grounds, creating an impression of solitude and privacy.

Rooms at Takefue

Takefue exhibits a rustic but elegant style, with black beams and straw-and-plaster stucco characterising the traditional farm-type buildings. Rooms exhibit the same style, updated to modern standards of comfort and luxury, and most of the rooms feature their own private rotenburo outdoor stone baths. Takefue was built in 1998, the last Year of the Rabbit, and the furry critters feature heavily in decorations throughout the hotel.

Food & drink

Guests at Takefue enjoy breakfast and dinner in the privacy of their own rooms, with fresh, seasonal Kumamoto ingredients whipped up into creative takes on traditional Japanese cuisine. Special dietary requirements are happily catered for with advance notice.

Facilities

In addition to the rotenburo outdoor baths which many of the rooms have private access to, there are also public onsen which can be reserved for private use. These include Chikurin no yu, a collection of baths spread amid huge boulders, and Sasabune, a vast seven-sided wooden tub. The hotel’s spa, Zen, offers full-body massages, facials and other treatments.

Activities at Takefue

Kurokawa Onsen has nearby Mount Aso to thank for its hot springs; one of the largest active volcanoes in the world, it’s a stunning sight and a hike up its slopes is a rewarding experience. Also nearby are the beautiful Nabegataki Waterfalls and Oshitoishi Hill, a sacred spot strewn with otherworldly volcanic rocks. Aso Shrine lies at the bottom of the mountain and is believed to date back as far as 2,000 years, and is home to a sacred pine tree believed to bestow good luck on marriages. Well worth a day trip is the old town of Yufuin, located in a fertile green valley and populated with paddy fields, ryokan, temples and shrines.
