Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Being a traditional ryokan, guests at Hidatei Hanaougi will enjoy many facets of traditional Japanese culture such as being waited on by a serving lady, sleeping in a tatami-style room and experiencing onsen baths.

Rooms at Hidatei Hanaougi

Built using local Japanese timbers, the rooms feature tatami-mat flooring and Japanese futon bedding, and even have a massage chair for unwinding at the end of the day. Many rooms include an open-air bath on the terrace, built from either stone, ceramic or Japanese Keyaki timber, where you can relax and enjoy the hot springs in privacy.

Food & drink

Hida Takayama restaurant prides itself on using local, seasonal vegetables, meat and fish, and serves a delicious Hida beef with local Hida sake. Hida beef is internationally renowned for its highly marbled nature and melt-in-the-mouth texture, and is considered a rival to Kobe beef in terms of quality. Seafood comes direct from the Sea of Japan, with Japanese char and ayu also being served fresh from the rivers that run through Hida Takayama.

Hidatei Hanaougi’s main Japanese cypress wood bath and sauna are great places to relax and unwind after a day exploring the local area, and the open-air bath in the garden is surrounded by a beautiful rock garden. After you’ve enjoyed a bath in the hot springs, head to the salon for a healthy cold tea, which will help cool you down.

Activities at Hidatei Hanaougi

Bicycles are free to use for all guests wanting to explore the area, and nearby you can visit the Hida Kokubun Temple, Miyagawa Morning Market, the Hidatakayama Museum, or the Hida Minzoku Mura Folk Village. Takayama-jinya is the last remaining office building of the Tokugawa shogunate, dating from the early 19th century, and includes a rice granary, a garden, and a morbidly fascinating torture chamber. On the other end of the spectrum, the Teddy Bear Eco Village is home to more than a thousand of the toys, some of which are over a century old.
