Quieter and more laid-back than Bali, wonderfully varied Lombok is Indonesia’s hidden treasure, and as a predominantly Muslim island it’s culturally distinct from its Hindu neighbour.
Its south coast boasts some of the best beaches in Indonesia and its magnificent centrepiece, Mount Rinjani, looms over the island, gazing out across the ocean. The active volcano seduces visitors up its forested slopes with the promise of hot springs at its summit and staggering views over Lombok - rich reward for the heart-pumping trek.
A speedboat from Lombok will take you to the pristine Gili islands, which offer some great snorkelling and diving among vibrant coral reefs. The white sand beaches are well worth stepping off the beaten track for, with unspoilt views stretching as far as Mount Rinjani, which lurks on the horizon.
