Siem Reap & Temples of Angkor

Dating back some 600-900 years to the Angkorian era and the times of the famous Khmer Empire, the jungle region that surrounds the town of Siem Reap is made up of around 500 ancient temples. The best known (and preserved) is the world-renowned Angkor Wat - a truly stunning lost world and impressive monument to South-east Asian ancient civilisation.

If you really want to uncover and get the most out of the region you’ll need a good few days to explore all the area has to offer. The Angkor Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to a sprawling playground of hidden temples and fascinating ancient ruins, many of which are not awash with tourists and their flashing cameras.

Siem Reap itself has been in the business of hosting foreign visitors for over 100 years but it has changed somewhat since those days. It’s now host to some fabulous five-star hotels – the Belmond La Residence d’Angkor is a perfect slice of boutique chic sitting along the river - a variety of decent restaurants and busy nightlife. If you’re looking for a more traditional Cambodian experience, a boat trip along the Tonle Sap Lake to visit old fishing villages is a must.
