Hotel Overview

sense of place

African Relish is located in the relaxed town of Prince Albert in the Karoo region of South Africa. Prince Albert is a historic town, full of churches, galleries and curio shops, and a charming place to improve your cookery skills at a relaxed pace.

rooms at african relish

Deuerdrift 2 is a comfortable bungalow cottage, which sleeps two on either a double or twin basis. The cottage features a lounge and a fully-equipped kitchen with a wood-burning black stove, as well as a covered stoep with a mobile braii South African barbeque and a large private garden.

food & drink

The cottage itself is self-catering, and features a large kitchen and braii barbeque – but needless to say, there’ll be plenty of opportunity to enjoy the fruit of all your effort in the cookery classes. Prince Albert is home to several fantastic restaurants if you fancy eating out, with delicious roasts on offer at the Gallery Café and fantastic Asian food served up at Simply Saffron.

facilities

African Relish offers ‘anytime’ courses, which run throughout the year and can be joined at short notice, and ‘scheduled courses’ where special guest chefs are welcomed to lead expert sessions and classes. Classes range from half- to full-day, and range from basic lessons, such as how to use herbs and spices to enhance the flavour of your dishes, to more advanced classes like pastry making, and international cuisines from South African to Indian. Scheduled courses will see you learning specific skills from masters of the craft, including charcuterie from Neil Jewell and Indian dishes from Reza Mahammad. Other celebrity chefs on the line-up include Jason Whitehead and Bertus Basson.

activities at african relish

The expertise on offer at African Relish extends beyond cookery, and yoga classes are on offer led by experienced teachers, as are book clubs, cycling tours, and art classes with visiting painters. Bicycles are available to rent if you’d like to explore Prince Albert at your own pace. Other activities include visits to the SoetKaroo cellar to learn about the production of port wine, olive oil tasting at Prince Albert Olives, and a ghost walk through the historic town with a local storyteller.
