Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

There’s a variety of routes to choose from, lasting anything from 2 nights to 28 days, but a 3 day trip between Cape Town and Johannesburg is ideal for slotting in to your Africa itinerary.

Cabins aboard the Rovos Train

Handsome wooden panelling and Edwardian details make the three cabin categories wonderfully escapist, leaving you to lie back, enjoy the incredible views, or be lulled to sleep by the soft locomotive sounds. Each category comes with all the comforts you’d hope for, including air conditioning and private bathrooms, but to really treat yourself, stay in one of the Royal Cabins. These take up half a carriage, and have Victorian-style roll-top baths.

Food & Drink

A gong sounds for all meals, and begins a magical experience in the dining car: think crisp white table-cloths, starched napkins, and the buzz of international chatter. Dinner is particularly special, with a formal dress code, a fantastic selection of South African wines, and game as a speciality.

Facilities

You can sip a G & T and admire the mesmerising views from the Observation car, or have an afternoon siesta in one of the lounge carriages.

Activities aboard the Rovos Train

On the Cape Town to Johannesburg route, you’ll bid farewell to majestic Table Mountain, before heading in the direction of Matjesfontein (a wonderfully preserved Victorian village). Along the way to Johannesburg you’ll meander through sweeping grasslands, scenic winelands, and flamingo-dotted lakes, with the chance to explore the 'Big Hole' diamond mine, and city of Kimberley.
