Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Taking its name from the Tambopata National Reserve that it lies within, the centre is set amidst wild and completely unspoilt landscapes, including miles of rainforest and hundreds of animals and native birds – you’ll even be able to spot them from your room. Peccaries (small wild pigs) are one of the most common animals in the area, and these roam the lodge and garden, sometimes in their hundreds.

The research centre is known for its groundbreaking macaw conservation, and during your stay you can talk to ecologists, biologists and wildlife experts as they carry out their work.

Rooms at Tambopata Research Center

Making the most of their remote and spectacular location, the bedrooms open up onto the rainforest, ensuring you are close to nature as possible, and they all offer beautiful views. The area’s Infierno community have crafted the rooms in a traditional Ese-Eja style, including palm-thatched roofs, giving each one a local and authentic feel. Most have hammocks to relax in and there’s even Wi-Fi here, so you can stay connected even in the remotest location – but we recommend switching off!

Food & Drink

The centre showcases local Peruvian dishes as well as international cuisine, such as carapulcra, a traditional Andean potato dish cooked on hot stones. Breakfast starts early to accommodate early-morning activities, and lunch and dinner are also served. Each hearty meal is three courses, offering a wide variety of soups, salads, appetisers, mains and desserts.

If you get peckish in the day there is also a snack bar where you can grab a light bite, and there is unlimited access to coffee, tea, fresh fruit juices and filtered spring water. In the evening, enjoy a cocktail or a classic Pisco Sour in the bar.

Facilities

Despite its remote location, the lodge offers everything you need for a comfortable stay, and more, including spa treatments that are perfect for unwinding after a day in the rainforest, such as intense jungle massages using the plants of the Amazon and soothing foot reflexology with hot stones.

Activities at Tambopata Research Center

If you have a passion for nature and wildlife then Tambopata is perfect for you, from seeing brightly-coloured macaws at the clay licks to spotting monkeys in the trees. As well as the chance to talk to the experts and find out more about the Amazon’s unique wildlife and ecosystems, the centre offers a range of activities including scenic hikes, day and night, across floodplains and palm swamps. Trips can be tailored to suit you, including private excursions such as photography tours and birdwatching trips.

To truly appreciate the spectacular beauty of the rainforest, climb the nearby 30-metre canopy tower: at the top, you can bask in your surroundings with panoramic views few have the privilege of experiencing. In the evening, enjoy a romantic sunset cruise and experience the Amazon as it comes alive at night.

Hotel location

The Tambopata Research Center is a remote lodge in the Amazon, and is difficult to get to, but well worth the effort. To reach the centre, take a flight to Puerto Maldonado International Airport from Cusco (45 minutes from Velasco Astete Airport) or Lima (3 hours from Jorge Chavez Airport).

On arrival into Puerto Maldonado, you will be met by a guide and have the chance to store any luggage you do not need (at stages you will need to carry your luggage, which is limited to 15 kilos). Then it’s a 40-minute drive to Infierno Community Port, where you will board a motored canoe and head upstream. After travelling for three hours you will spend your first night at Refugio Amazonas Lodge (the boat trip is not possible by night). In the morning, the final leg is a four-hour boat ride to the centre.
