Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Perched above the city of El Calafate, Boutique Hotel La Cantera offers amazing views over the Patagonian ice fields while promising easy access to the conveniences of the city. The hotel has something of an alpine feel, particularly in the common areas and the Lake rooms, which have a cosy atmosphere and wooden ceilings.

Rooms at La Cantera

All of the hotel's rooms offer pretty stunning natural views – the only thing you have to do is decide between the mountains and the lake. All are comfortable and stylishly designed; Mountain rooms have big, cosy beds and wooden French doors, while Lake rooms have a slightly more traditional aesthetic, with dark wood furnishings, deep red walls and traditional Patagonian patterned textiles.

Food & Drink

La Cantera is committed to the promotion and preservation of all things Patagonian, and this extends to the restaurant, where authentic dishes are served which reflect the rich, hearty flavours of Patagonian cuisine. The classic, simple dishes include grilled lamb, salmon and trout served with locally grown mountain vegetables – perfect for warming up after a day exploring the glaciers or mountains. Food is accompanied by a range of high-quality Argentinean wines.

Facilities

The hotel’s rooftop terrace is a great place to take in views over the ice fields, or spend some time working on your tan when the weather allows. When the sun goes in, or after a day’s exertions in the mountain air, the cosy library is perfect for warming up with a good book.

Activities at La Cantera

Mother Nature is the star of the show in this part of the world, with Patagonia’s famous glaciers begging to be explored. The most famous is the Perito Merino Glacier, which is incredibly impressive – a great blue sheet which relentlessly marches two metres a day, shedding huge icebergs as it goes – but is also very accessible. You don’t need to be super-fit to explore the glacier, and a range of lighter walking circuits are available, as well as trekking on the ice itself.
