Colourful, chaotic and charismatic: Marrakech’s markets, ancient buildings and tiny boutique hotels ooze character and charm. Take a sensory sojourn in the Jemaa el Fna main square amongst snake charmers, spice markets and a cacophony of bizarre musical instruments – and be prepared for some hardcore haggling. Just traversing the mountains in a 4x4 is breathtaking, but by far the best way to see them in their snow- capped, red-washed glory is on a magical hot air balloon ride. A desert experience shouldn’t be missed on a Moroccan holiday, and the dunes are easier to get to than you may think. The Agafay desert, with its otherworldly landscapes, is just outside Marrakech, while the fabled sands of the Sahara and the romance of Ouarzazate beckon from further afield. Turn back the centuries to a simpler way of life, and enjoy an enticing escape from everyday reality.

A hippy hangout in the 1960s, the lovely fishing port of Essaouira has a laidback atmosphere and delicious fresh seafood – all with a coastal breeze that makes it a cooler option for summer - and makes it popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers. Further afield, you'll find the historic port of Agadir and the ancient town of Taroudant.

From the labyrinthine souks of Fes to the history and romance of Meknes, Casablanca and Tangier, and the dramatic blue hues of Chefchaouen, northern Morocco has much to offer on a holiday in north Africa.
