Antigua

3 nightsANTIGUA

Your luxury honeymoon begins in the beautiful colonial city of Antigua, in Guatemala’s central highlands. While it may not have the white sand beaches and azure seas of its Caribbean island namesake, it makes up for it in its abundance of beautiful colonial architecture, with its cobbled streets lined with pastel-coloured, charmingly faded buildings. One such building is your hotel, Posada del Angel, which combines modern comfort and luxury with beautiful period features. The hotel’s central position makes it perfect for exploring Antigua at your leisure, with the historic cathedral and the Parque Central among the attractions within walking distance.

Lake Atitlan

2 nightsLAKE ATITLAN

The next leg of your journey sees you heading into the beautiful wilderness of the Sierra Madre mountain range, and the serene Lake Atitlan, around two and a half hours’ drive west of Antigua. Surrounded by towering volcanoes, the lake has often been described as among the most beautiful in the world, and kayaking, boating and hiking are all great ways to explore it up close. The countryside surrounding the lake is dotted with coffee and avocado plantations, and historic Mayan villages. You’ll spend two nights here at the boutique hotel Casa Palopo, another colonial-style luxury property which has a picturesque, romantic location on a hillside overlooking the lake.

Flores

2 nightsFLORES

Next up, you’ll board a flight to Flores, where you’ll be transferred to your next hotel, Las Lagunas. The property lives up to its tagline of ‘luxury by nature’, with an unbeatable setting in a private wildlife reserve: your neighbours here will include monkeys, ocelots, and wild pigs, and the landscapes are made up of thick jungle and serene lagoons. You can meet the animals on expert-led wildlife tours, which depart daily from the hotel. This is also a great place for history lovers, who can enjoy exploring Mayan ruins without the crowds that the likes of Chichen Itza attract. The ruins at Tikal, Uaxactun, and Yaxha remain unspoilt and ripe for exploration.

You’ll be transferred across the Belize border to Mountain Pine Ridge, around two and a half hours’ drive east. You’ll spend three nights at Hidden Valley Inn, an aptly-named boutique hotel set in a private reserve, comprising more than 7,000 acres of thick rainforest. Needless to say, this is another fantastic hotel for wildlife lovers, with baboons, butterflies and magnificent scarlet macaws among the residents. A range of guided nature experiences are on offer, to ensure your stay is as fun, safe and educational as possible. Cultural activities include more pre-Hispanic ruins at Xunantunich, and the bustling farmers’ market at nearby San Ignacio.

Tulum

3 nightsTULUM

Your journey ends with three nights at Tulum, on Mexico’s beautiful Caribbean coastline. This is a great place to finish, as it allows you to be as active or as lazy as you please: should you still not have satisfied your cultural curiosity, you can explore the Mayan ruins at Tulum, which perch atmospherically on cliffs overlooking the ocean. Otherwise, you can enjoy relaxing at your beautiful hotel, the appropriately named Mi Amor, set on a beautiful cliff overlooking the picturesque landscapes of the Riviera Maya. Scuba diving, kiteboarding or simply lazing on the beach are popular seafront options, while between May and October you can enjoy a magical wildlife experience: watching sea turtles lay their eggs on white sand beaches.
