Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Camellia Hills sits on a mountainside, surrounded by lush green gardens, tea bushes and pine forests. The Castlereagh Valley embodies the famous beauty of Sri Lanka’s western Tea Country, with rolling green hills blanketed with tea plantations as far as the eye can see. The view is made all the more beautiful by the crystalline reservoir which covers the bottom of the valley.

Rooms at Camellia Hills

Camellia Hills has five gorgeous rooms, all offering stunning views across Castlereagh Valley and the reservoir. The rooms themselves are beautiful too, with dark wood floors, ceiling beams and four-poster beds. The high ceilings, combined with glass doors sliding open onto your private veranda, create a light, breezy feel.

Food & Drink

In Camellia Hills’ cosy dining room, or out on the veranda enjoying the view, a delicious menu of international cuisine is served according to your preferences - the chef will come to discuss each meal with you personally. Food can be as traditional as you wish, from tasty hoppers (rice pancakes) at breakfast to fiery curries, while western dishes are also available if you prefer.

Facilities

In the garden, you’ll find a small infinity pool which appears to blend with the surface of the reservoir below, and an ambalama – a traditional Sri Lankan relaxation pavilion. Both are perfect spots to relax with a pot of tea from the estate and admire the view. Inside, there are two living rooms, with open terraces to admire the vista, and a cosy fireplace to curl up in front of during those chilly evenings.

Activities at Camellia Hills

It goes without saying that tea is pretty high on the agenda here. With the hotel surrounded by working tea estates, you’ll have the opportunity to walk through the estates, meet tea workers, learn about the production process, and, of course, sample the end product. You may even have the chance to have a go at picking tea yourself; keep your eyes peeled for eagles soaring overhead.

Non-tea-related activities include walks to waterfalls and scenic private picnics, visits to the colonial-era Warleigh Church and the island's highest town, Nuwara Eliya, and, for the adventurous guest, trekking the mighty Adam’s Peak. For a dose of wildlife, you can learn about the leopards that roam Sri Lanka's green hills at the leopard research station.
