Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Set in a secluded palm grove overlooking the Arabian Sea, Neeleshwar Heritage is surrounded by the natural beauty for which Kerala is famous. Service is friendly and attentive with an emphasis on Keralan traditions, right from the coconut drink that greets every guest on arrival.

Rooms at Neeleshwar Hermitage

Neeleshwar Hermitage takes its name from the hermitages which Renaissance-era princes built on their country estates for spiritual retreats, and the 18 detached cottages here combine regal luxury with a rustic, earthy aesthetic. Built from local laterite stone and topped with tile or thatch roofs, they have teak floors and intricately carved woodwork, with handmade furniture and the work or local artists adorning the walls. Each is named for a different yogic virtue, such as Shakti, Ananda and Sukha.

Food and drink

Neeleshwar Hermitage has two restaurants two choose from which incorporate Indian, Middle Eastern and European flavours in delicious and nutritious cuisine. Annapurna specialises in authentic Keralan, normally vegetarian food, and the beachside Meenakshi is the place to go to enjoy freshly caught seafood as well as a range of salads and light meals. Annapurna also has a bar, which along with the Varuna bar overlooking the pool, serves a wide range of Indian beers and wines. The hotel caters well for solo travellers, with each of the restaurants having a ‘meeting table’ for independent guests (or indeed anyone else) to meet and swap stories with one another.

Facilities

Neeleshwar is home to an Ayurvedic spa, where a range of treatments draw on the ancient wisdom of Indian medicine. All ingredients are naturally sourced and organically produced, and the hotel employs disadvantaged tribal groups in the Sahaydri Mountains, ensuring that they receive a fair deal. While (well-behaved) kids are welcome and an extra bed is available per cottage, this hotel is aimed more at adults than children, and there are no childminding services or other facilities for kids.

Activities at Neeleshwar Hermitage

The beautiful Western Ghats are on your doorstep, a fertile mountain range that is begging to be explored and is home to many plant and animal species that exist nowhere else on earth, like the bizarre purple frog. A cruise on the luxurious Lotus Houseboat, restored from a traditional Keralan rice barge, is a beautiful way to experience the famed Keralan backwaters. Back at the hotel, cookery classes are on offer at the restaurant, where you can learn to rustle up traditional Malabar dishes using fresh seafood brought in daily by local fishermen.
