Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Brunton Boatyard is right on Cochin’s harbourfront, amongst former 19th-century trading houses.

Rooms at Brunton Boatyard

The rooms and suites have four-poster beds, antique furnishings and fresh flowers, and all the rooms - even the bathrooms! - overlook the harbour and the sea. As part of its eco-friendly policies, the hotel harvests rainwater for the rooms and the kitchens. Enjoy cocktails on your balcony, looking out over the bustling harbour, the playful dolphins, the cormorants flying above and the ships and fishing boats passing by, and see the sun set over Vypeen Island.

Food & drink

From fresh fish caught the same morning, to vindaloo curries seasoned with spices from the markets, the eclectic range of dishes reflect Cochin’s melting pot of cultures. In the aptly-named History restaurant, local chefs recreate local favourites, giving them a contemporary twist. One of the signature dishes is the first-class railway mutton curry, which is made from a secret recipe and cooked in a brass pot for six hours.

If you become a fan of the hotel’s fusion cuisine (and it’s hard not to), enjoy a cooking demonstration on the terrace with a chef who will take you through some of the menu’s most popular creations. In the afternoon, linger over tea in the lounge and in the evening, have a drink or two in the cosy Armoury bar – just ask the bar staff to make your favourite beverage.

Facilities

There’s a tranquil courtyard and a pretty pool in the lush green gardens, and we recommend unwinding with some yoga or a relaxing Kerala massage in the Ayurvedic centre. If you can catch a concert of traditional Baul music, you’re in for a treat - played on ancient instruments such as the ektara and dotara, the spectacular performances fuse music, singing and dancing.

Activities at Brunton Boatyard

The hotel is like a living museum - the interiors are filled with arched wooden ceilings, chandeliers, antique furnishings and terracotta floors, with photographs and prints of the boatyard and Dutch maritime maps adorning the walls.

Pick up a map and head out on foot or by bike to explore the area, from Mattancherry Palace to the colourful markets and antique shops, and as night falls, head out on the water on a romantic sunset cruise from the hotel’s private jetty.
