Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Sitting in the remote, gorgeous Noonu Atoll, 187km north of Malé, Velaa is – as the name suggests – its own private world. Surrounded by endless white beaches, brilliant blue ocean and palm trees as far as the eye can see, it’s almost a cliché of island paradise.

Rooms at Velaa Private Island

Accommodation at Velaa takes the form of standalone, luxurious villas, with mahogany panels and pillars, thatched roofs and floor-to-ceiling glass windows through which you can gaze out at the ocean. Beach Pool Villas feature large gardens and gazebos with daybeds, while the two-bedroom Beach Pool Houses, with large living areas and kitchens, are perfect for families.

The ultra-exclusive Romantic Pool Residence, accessible only by boat, is perfect for a honeymoon or romantic escape.

Food & drink

Velaa is a gourmand’s paradise. Start the day off right at Athiri, where a buffet breakfast of fresh fruits, pastries and cooked options, are on offer; at other times, wood-fired pizzas are a particular speciality. In the pan-Asian Tavaru, Chinese, Korean and Japanese dishes are on offer, with gourmet, modern European cuisine available at the stunning Aragu, which hovers on boardwalks above the ocean.

At Avi, a range of expertly-mixed cocktails are on offer, accompanied once the sun goes down by a live DJ who turns the place from a relaxed poolside bar into a buzzing nightspot.

Facilities

Velaa is home to a beautiful spa, where a range of treatments are available which draw on wellness traditions from across Asia, including yoga, Ayurveda, and meditation. You can enjoy relaxing, rejuvenating treatments while taking in views of the ocean and enjoying a glass of champagne or freshly pressed juice.

Over 1,000 books and magazines are held at the resort’s library, which is a comfortable place to relax and read with a cup of tea or coffee. There’s also a kids’ club, with a large playground, swimming pool and activities led by experienced youth carers.

Activities at Velaa Private Island

The cyan blue oceans which surround Velaa are the perfect playground for water sports, with paddleboarding, surfing, kitesurfing and parasailing all on offer - and you can even venture beneath the waves in a mini submarine. The clear, wildlife-rich waters make this a great place for diving, too, with grey reef sharks, nurse sharks, manta rays, black spotted stingrays and eagle rays among the animals who make their home here.

Back on dry land, Velaa offers multiple sporting opportunities, including squash, badminton, beach volleyball and climbing on the six-metre climbing wall.
