Getting under the skin of rugged northern Sweden is what the Aurora Safari Camp is all about. This extreme glamping experience in the wilderness of the Arctic Circle was founded and run by the Swedish photographer Fredrik Broman, who was inspired by his time as a guide for East African safaris and decided to bring that experience to his homeland - the challenge being adapting the safari for harsh winters in Swedish Lapland. But he succeeded: with cosy campfires, wood-burning stoves and reindeer hides, the result is an authentic and exclusive camp that gets you back to nature.

Sense of place

The Aurora Safari Camp is far from any man-made light, providing the perfect backdrop for seeing the aurora borealis in all its glory. It is found on the banks of the Rane River in Swedish Lapland, between the trees.

Rooms at Aurora Safari Camp

Influenced by the Lavvu tents of the Sami people, the four secluded tents are in the Nordic tipi design, each with a wood-burning stove and camping mattresses. They are available on an exclusive-use basis and can be set up as single, double, twin or family rooms to suit your requirements, with up to four people in each one. There are two separate bathrooms.

Food & drink

Tuck into smoked reindeer and dried moose meat in the lounge area, and wash it down with hot lingonberry juice. Needless to say, the food here is organic and locally sourced, and you can enjoy delicious three-course dinners as well as beer and wine.

Facilities

Warm up in the sauna, which sits on a float frozen by the ice of the river, before sitting round the campfire with a glass of champagne as the Northern Lights dance in the endless night sky. Snuggle down under reindeer hides and watch the light show with a Swedish fika (the stars are pretty spectacular here too), or wake up in time to catch the sunrise above the river.

Activities at Aurora Safari Camp

Fredrik will share his landscape photography tips to help you shoot this incredible scenery - including the Northern Lights - and he'll take you dog-sledding and snowmobiling on the frozen lake (you can also arrive at the camp by snowmobile!).

Also on offer are reindeer safaris, snowshoeing, fatbiking on snow mountain bikes, Nordic skiing and ice fishing, or try your hand at the art of ice sculpting. Visit the Storforsen waterfalls, which are spectacular in winter, while in summer, you can enjoy river rafting, kayaking and nature treks. He'll also introduce you to the local Sami people and share stories of his countless adventures.

If you want to take the adventure up a notch, go on an overnight husky expedition and see what sort of wildlife you can spy, including moose, red foxes, reindeer and roe deer, as well as a wide variety of birdlife. You can even enjoy a unique hot air ballooning experience, flying in a balloon in the colours of the Sami flag over frozen landscapes and under the Northern Lights and the stars - truly unforgettable!
