Monaci delle Terre Nere

Location: Sicily & Aeolian Islands | Italy

Price guide: $$$$$ $100-$200 per person per night

Monaci delle Terre Nere is a rural boutique estate on the foothills of Mount Etna at 500m above sea level, commanding sprawling views. This luxury hotel was transformed from a rundown 18th-century villa, once run by monks who cultivated the vines, to a stylish yet distinctly Sicilian eco-hotel by hands-on owners Guido and Ada Coffa, who revitalised the grounds with olive groves, fruit orchards and organic vegetable gardens.
Perfect forFamilies and couples in need of a country escape – this is one of Sicily’s top rural hideaways.
In the knowWe’re lucky to have Monaci delle Terre Nere: when Guido stumbled upon it in 2007, he was actually searching for a private home. When he found the villa, he realised that it was destined to be an eco-hotel.

Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Monaci delle Terre Nere is perfectly poised on a 40-acre farm, between the sea and the volcano, close to the attractive towns of Catania and Taormina.

Rooms at Monaci delle Terre Nere

Each room and suite is unique in design and décor, blending rustic features such as exposed lava stone walls and beamed ceilings with contemporary four-poster beds and modern art. You won’t find televisions or phones in the rooms, encouraging an unplugged experience, while the cosy fireplaces and freestanding tubs hint that this is an idyllic hideaway for the cooler months, too.

Food & Drink

Pull up a chair on the terrace for volcano views with your Sicilian meal, crafted using organic produce from the garden. Start with scaccia ragusana, try the branzino al limone for mains and sweeten up with a semifreddo al pistachio. Guido also happens to be a qualified sommelier, so get him to pick a fine Sicilian wine to complement your meal.

Facilities

There is a lava-stone outdoor pool for a refreshing dip, as well as a billiard room and a lounge to relax in at the end of the day.

Activities at Monaci delle Terre Nere

Mount Etna is calling... Take the cable car from Sapienza Refuge up 2500m, and from here hike up the slopes of Mount Etna to reach craters at 2920m and be rewarded with uninterrupted views. You can also visit the wineries surrounding Etna, or hit the beach - and don’t miss Taormina, with its Greek, Corinthian and Byzantine history. Meanwhile, film fanatics should visit Forza D’Agro, the village where The Godfather was filmed.

When you’re not out exploring Sicily, stroll through the sprawling gardens of the hotel. There is also a lava-stone outdoor pool, a billiard room and a lounge to relax in at the end of the day.
