Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

The island of Ortigia may be tiny, but it’s played a big role in history as the centre of the ancient city of Syracuse, which has endured through ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine rule to the modern day: relics of its ancient past are everywhere in its historic streets.

Rooms at Algila Ortigia Charme Hotel

The rooms have a homely, traditional feel, with wrought-iron bedframes and mirrors, handmade rugs, wooden-beamed ceilings and antique furniture, while the traditional bathrooms are decked out with traditional Sicilian tiles. Each one has an individual style, and much of the furniture is made up of antique pieces from the original building. They overlook either the courtyard or the sea, and some have hot tubs on a private pool terrace.

Food & Drink

The restaurant maintains the original charm of the building with its stone arches and fireplace, and the food is classic, hearty Sicilian fare, based around meat, vegetables and herbs from the island’s countryside and seafood fresh from the coast. Local delicacies to try include ricotta flavoured with pistachio, couscous with calamari and shellfish, and regional cheeses and cold meats. The food is accompanied by an extensive wine list, all of which is Sicilian.

There are also plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance, while the Piazza Duomo and the vibrant fresh food market is 10 minutes away.

Facilities

There is a high-end spa just next door to the hotel if you fancy a spot of pampering.

Activities at Algila Ortigia Charme Hotel

The whole city of Syracuse is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it goes without saying that history and culture buffs will find plenty of interest here. Ancient Greek ruins include the Temple of Apollo and the Greek Theatre - one of the largest of its kind anywhere. Later buildings include the 7th-century cathedral, which was built on top of an ancient temple, making it a prime example of Syracuse’s rich, many-layered history. For days out with the kids, try the Marine Aquarium, or the Puppet Lab & Theatre.
