Kuching & Surrounds

A city rich in history, style and modern sophistication, Kuching is the state capital of Sarawak. One of the most multicultural cities in Malaysia, the grand Sarawak River separates the commercial Chinese residence of the south from the old Malay character of the north.

A fascinating kaleidoscope of culture and crafts, Kuching is a heaven for tourists, as it is small enough to walk around, but big enough to keep you interested for days. For a taste of the ancient culture that is still evident in the city, visit the temple of Tua Pek Kong, in the heart of Kuching. The oldest Chinese temple in the area, marvel at the spectacularly decorated roofs and golden dragons that adorn the front, before heading directly across to the striking Chinese Museum.

Because of its day-trip proximity to many premium nature sites, use Kuching as a base and travel north to Bako National Park, which, with its sheer mass of attractions and activities, has become one of Sarawak’s most popular parks. Between sightings of long-tailed macaques, wild boar and the rare proboscis monkeys, hike along the numerous jungle trails to see Borneo’s rocky shorelines, luscious forests and thrilling waterfalls. Heading south, a stop in the Semenggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is a must for seeing the brightly-coloured orangutans, and culture vultures should venture south-east to Batang Ai National Park, to visit the traditional longhouses of the Iban tribes.
