Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Set amongst the acacia forest high on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, the camp is based only 15 minutes away from Ngorongoro Crater via the quiet Lemala access route, and is frequented by elephants and buffalo during the night. It is also close to the Massai village which can be visited with a guide.

Rooms at Lemala Ngorongoro

Here you're nestled in amongst the ancient acacia forest, with just eight tents (plus one tent for families). The tents are green canvas, with large double or twin beds, and small ensuite bathroom with generous bucket showers, and a little table outside to drink your morning coffee on. It can get pretty chilly up here, particularly in the winter months of June, July, and August, but there are gas heaters in the tent to keep you toasty. If you do feel the cold though we'd recommend a good pair of pyjamas, and a warm fleece for the evenings.

Food & Drink

We loved sitting around the campfire in the early evening here, before moving in to the mess tent for a delicious dinner. The chefs use fresh and locally sourced ingredients to make sure the food is of a high standard. In addition to this, the camp also organises barbecues for all the guests to enjoy together and share tales of their travels.

Facilities

Lemala Ngorongoro organises private vehicles and guides for all guests. For children there is a kids club where they can learn how to make blunt bows and arrows as well throwing blunt spears. For adults, there is a well-stocked library and internet access in the main tent.

Activities at Lemala Ngorongoro

The highlight of staying at Lemala is visiting the Ngorongoro Crater, and you're perfectly placed to do so here, as you're right beside one of the quieter, less used access roads. The camp provides every group with private guides and vehicles which can leave as early as 6.15am to be one of the first to the Ngorongoro crater (the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera) before the masses arrive. Crater permits for Big 5 game drives are usually only for half a day at a time, so when you're not in the crater it's perfect for snuggling up with a good book and unwinding back at camp. Alternatively, we can arrange some walks in the local area with rangers, or birdwatching excursions.
