Peponi

Location: Kenya Coast | Kenya

Perched on the southern tip of Lamu Island, Peponi is an East African legend. In spite of a reputation for attracting off-duty rock stars and royalty, you shouldn’t travel there expecting glitzy 5* luxury. The draw of Peponi is in its uniquely Swahili charm. Dhows float back and forth in front of the terrace, donkeys carry coconuts through the nearby streets, and firm friendships are made each evening in the hotel bar.
Perfect forExotic charm, peace and authenticity.
In the knowThis is the place for off-duty glitterati to spend New Year, but be warned, to join the party you’ll need to book at least a year in advance.

Hotel Overview

Where

Shela Village, a short dhow ride away from Lamu Town, Kenya.

Rooms at Peponi

There are just 24 rooms, so you get very personal attention, and the charismatic owners, Lars and Carol, and their excellent team will soon be treating you like an old friend. There are comfortable standard rooms, with whitewashed walls and beautifully carved Swahili beds. Bathrooms are ensuite and there are fans (though not air-conditioning) in each room. Should you wish to splash out, the Superior rooms are well worth the additional cost, as while the rooms are largely similar, you do get a small outside sitting area- perfect for sitting outside on a lazy afternoon with a good book!

Food and Facilities

Like many of the world's most fabulous corners, Lamu`s charm lies in its remoteness. This means that the food at Peponi focuses on the finest local ingredients, so there’s fresh mangrove crab, delicious tropical fruits, and coconut galore! Carnivores need not despair however, as there is some fabulous meat available, they just need a little warning so it can be flown in with the weekly shop.

Activities at Peponi

Activities from Peponi vary by the season, but there is normally a good range of watersports on offer as well as dhow trips to explore different parts of the island. At different times of year, there’s snorkelling, windsurfing and wakeboarding, sailing, water-skiing and some fantastic deep sea fishing.
