The Kenyan coast is home to a very different culture to the rest of the country, as it was heavily involved in the Arab spice trading routes. Every town and village along the coast reflects that in some way, from the bustling town of Lamu in the north where the smell of spices waft through the air, to the relaxed vibe of Diani in the south. The landscape is different here too, with lush jungle sweeping the coastline and leafy valleys where waterfalls surge down the slopes.
With technicoloured coral reefs lining most of the coastline there are some spectacular diving opportunities to be had in these tropical waters, which benefits from spectacular visibility. Or, if you prefer catching fish to watching them, the coast is also famous for its budding big game fishing industry. For the sporty types, there is a multitude of water sports available to try your hand at, from kitesurfing to waterskiing and wakeboarding.
While the coast is usually visited at the end of a Kenyan holiday for some R&R, the surrounding region offers plenty of variety for a full holiday. Get your safari fix with a few nights in Tsavo National Park, which is just a short two hour drive from Mombassa and is the best place in Kenya for spotting elephant. If you prefer something a little different, there is also a great selection of championship level golf courses dotted along the coast.
