Oxygen is pumped through a ventilator above the bed to provide a good night’s sleep, and help you get acclimatized to the high altitude. The La Chola restaurant has a claim to fame, being located on the site of a famous hangout for the artists, poets and authors of Peru’s thriving literary scene (poet Pablo Neruda was apparently a regular). The contemporary dishes are inspired by both Peruvian and international cuisine, and there’s also a well-stocked wine cellar. The Qoya spa is modern and sophisticated, with an impressive hydrotherapy bath featuring great views of the city. There’s a floor just for men and one for women, with a range of massage and other treatments available. There’s also a fairtrade design store at Casa Cartagena.

When you’re not lounging in the spa or at the elegant terrace bars at Casa Cartagena, the nearby Plaza de Armas is the perfect place to start exploring Cusco. In the main square you will find a fascinating mix of Inca heritage and Colonial and Renaissance architecture.
