Tierra Chiloe is a stylish design hotel on the island of Chiloe, off southwest Chile. The hotel manages to combine traditional and modern design features; sitting on stilts and made from wood, it’s inspired by the island’s traditional architecture, but its angular style and modern furnishings lend it a contemporary feel. A programme of outdoor activities and excursions is offered to help you explore the unspoilt natural beauty of the island.

Perfect forEco-conscious travellers with an eye for design looking for a serene island getaway.
In the knowThe hotel’s innovative design is geared towards being eco-friendly, and even the geometric patterns of the wood are designed to ventilate and regulate heat without the use of electricity.

Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

The natural beauty and diversity of Tierra Chiloe is impossible to avoid here. From the same vantage point, you may be able to identify several different landscapes, including the inland Pacific Ocean, the calm Pullao Wetlands, and the green interior of the island.

Rooms at Tierra Chiloe

Tierra Chiloe’s 24 rooms and suites have an organic, almost Scandi feel, decked out in light wood from floor to ceiling. Large windows mean there’s plenty of natural light too, and lovely views over the unspoilt countryside of Chiloe, the Pacific Ocean and the wetlands. Everything about the rooms is locally sourced, and the attention to detail is exquisite – slippers are made from soft Chilean wool, and rooms are decorated by handicrafts courtesy of local artisans. The lovely bathrooms feature stylish square sinks and organic toiletries. All rooms feature fast Wi-Fi, and while there’s no TV, the spectacular views outside your window mean you won’t miss it.

Food & Drink

Unsurprisingly given its island location, the hotel’s restaurant has a strong emphasis on seafood, with fresh fish, mussels, sea urchins and more featuring prominently on the menu. A particular speciality is the curranto, a traditional method of cooking whereby meat and fish are wrapped in leaves and cooked for hours over hot stones in pits in the ground; food is then enjoyed communally, accompanied by accordion music. The sleek bar, meanwhile, is the perfect place to go for a nightcap – try a Chilean pisco with local ulmo honey, or choose from a wide selection of acclaimed Chilean wines.

The Uma Spa is a supremely relaxing space, decked out in the same local wood as the rest of the hotel; facilities include indoor and outdoor pools overlooking the Pullao Wetlands, and a sauna and steam room. Therapies on offer include shiatsu, massages, and reflexology treatments, helping you unwind after a day’s adventures and be ready to do it all again tomorrow.

Rooms at Tierra Chiloe

Outdoor adventures are the order of the day at Tierra Chiloe, with a variety of activities to choose from to help you explore this beautiful island. Mountain biking and hiking are popular ways to get around, with trails winding through traditional villages and past historic churches; horse riding is also on offer if you prefer to do things the old-fashioned way. Boat trips can be arranged to help you explore the coastline and the picturesque islands of Chelin and Quehui, while fishing and kayaking are other water-based activities on offer. Excursions to the prehistoric forests of the Bosquepiedra Private Park and the traditional handicrafts town of Castro can also be arranged.
