Butterfly House

Location: Bahia | Brazil

Price guide: £££££ £100-£200 per person per night

Though the exteriors may have succumbed to the encroaching jungle, with the thatched grass roofs completely shrouded by palm fronds, the Butterfly House’s interiors are determinedly boho-beach chic. It may be a bit of a mission to get to, but trust us when we says it’s worth it - turn onto a dirt road, weave between the freshwater lagoons and peel away the coconuts palms to reveal this stylish boutique eco-hotel flanked by one of Brazil’s most beautiful beaches.
Perfect forRomantic and very remote beach getaway for two.

Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Located on the Marau peninsula, wedged between the South Atlantic Ocean and Rio de Serra, the nearest neighbours are a handful of tiny fishing villages.

Rooms at Butterfly House

There are eight refined bungalows and three spacious suites to choose from, all built from sustainably grown Columbian bamboo and salvaged nut wood, topped with thatched grass roofs. The rooms feature a colourful blend of French and Moroccan interiors, with antique French ceramics, homespun Moroccan rugs and billowy white curtains all adding to their rustic charm.
The largest and most luxurious of the bungalows, the Almirante has two balconies, one which has a private outdoor shower and both with views of the garden. It also has a massive canopied bed, stucco blue walls and a blue-and-white tiled bathroom.

Food & Drink

The main lodge houses the bar and the restaurant, Anna Banana, where breakfast is a leisurely affair and dinner is equally so. Try the array of Brazilian treats, such as pao de queijo (cheese bread), pineapple cakes and guava biscuits, before feasting on the abundance of seafood, most specifically on the fresh and tasty lobster.
Set along the beach, the bar is lovely for an evening drink. Not that you will need it, but we recommend the ‘anti-stress’ cocktail, a citrusy mix of vodka, lemongrass, lime and sugar.

Facilities

The surrounding tropical gardens are sprinkled with day beds and hammocks, which you can spend your day flitting between, and the lodge offers a family playroom, yoga deck, pavilion lounge and tranquil swimming pool for quiet afternoons.

Activities at Butterfly House

There are several reed-fringed, freshwater lakes where you can go kayaking and paddle boarding, while the miles of pristine white-sand beaches are irresistible for sun-seekers. Water babies can have their fill by jumping off a boat along the Marau peninsula to spot the 2,000 varieties of tropical fish with some quality snorkelling and scuba diving.
Between October and November, clamber up the hill to Taipu Lighthouse to spot breeding humpback whales or go on a daytrip to Camamu Bay, littered with deserted tropical islands just perfect for a quiet lunch alone.
