Step inside to find interior patios, trickling fountains and even a small museum showcasing antiquities that were discovered during the renovation of this colonial townhouse.

In the knowDuring the building’s renovation, a stash of gold from the days of colonisation were unearthed beneath the staircase. The owner then decided to transform the building into a hotel, instead of a family home as planned, and created the El Tapado museum on-site to put this and other artefacts on exhibition.

Although there are around 50 rooms, La Casona manages to feel like an intimate boutique hotel. Opt for a room at the rear to ensure a good night’s sleep, as the hotel is right on the main drag so can be exposed to noise pollution if there are celebrations or marches taking place.

The quaint restaurant dishes up a buffet breakfast, and is also open for lunch and dinner. Sample the llama fillet, washed down with a bottle of Bolivian wine, and expect generous portions. Head up to the rooftop terrace for views over the city.
