Casa Grande Hotel is in the upmarket Zona Sur, not far from all the attractions of La Paz yet offering a serene retreat from the city.

The 65 rooms are sleek, spacious and modern, with a neutral colour scheme of whites and polished woods. Head here to find macabre trinkets, love potions and local sorcerers who’ll cast spells for a fee – or explore Jaen Street’s colourful alleys, where you’ll see traditionally-dressed women and a cluster of tiny museums. Further out of La Paz is Tiwanaku, one of the oldest pre-Incan sites in the world.
