Hotel Overview

Sense of place

It’s only 60 miles from the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires, but Estancia La Sofia feels a world away, surrounded by peaceful, beautiful countryside. The Pampas lowlands, vast tracts of beautiful grassland, stretch unspoilt for miles around.

Rooms at Estancia La Sofia

La Sofia’s six guestrooms exhibit the same colonial style as the rest of the hotel, with a comfortable, traditional design. They feature dark wooden shutters and furnishings, tiled stone floors and pleasant en-suite bathrooms; the Grand Suite features an open fireplace, and the Pampa Suite, right next to the polo field, affords beautiful sunrise views.

Food & Drink

Food at La Sofia is hearty and traditional, with a particular speciality in sumptuous Argentine steaks accompanied by fine red wine. Homemade breads and jams are among the goodies on offer at breakfast time, while vegetables often come straight from the hotel’s organic gardens. At teatime, manager Silke occasionally draws on her family heritage to offer delicious German treats.

Facilities

The hotel’s outdoor pool sits right next to the polo field, and offers stunning views over the Pampa plains; bar service is available at the pool all day, meaning that there’s no reason to lift a finger.

Activities at Estancia La Sofia

The hotel comprises its very own polo club with first-class facilities, making this an obvious activity for players of the sport; horse lovers of all stripes will find plenty to keep them occupied, though, with a range of rides on offer out into the Pampa. Riding and polo lessons are also on offer, as are traditional Argentine gaucho pursuits such as riding out into the countryside for a traditional barbecue. Nearby is the traditional town of San Antonio de Areco, where you can learn all about gaucho culture at the Ricardo Guiraldes museum.
