Buenos Aires

3 nightsBUENOS AIRES

Where better to begin your Argentine adventure than its iconic capital, Buenos Aires? One of the great South American metropolises, this is a city of faded colonial grandeur, cutting-edge culture, and hedonistic nightlife. You’ll spend the first three nights of your trip at Nuss Buenos Aires Soho, a modern design hotel housed in a colonial convent – the perfect microcosm of Buenos Aires. The hotel is in the Palermo Soho district, the most bohemian and fashionable neighbourhood in the city; galleries and boutiques line the leafy streets, while its myriad trendy cafes are perfect for sipping a cortada and watching life in the barrio go by.

A flight from Buenos Aires to San Carlos de Bariloche sees the beginning of the Patagonian stretch of your journey. You’ll spend two nights at the supremely relaxing Posada los Juncos, a homely alpine-style hotel on the shores of the Nahuel Huapi Lake. This leg of your trip is all about easing yourself in to Patagonia, relaxing by the lake and appreciating the area’s extreme natural beauty. Kayaking, rafting and fishing are all fantastic ways to explore the lake itself, while hiking, mountain biking and even skiing are on offer in the hills.

CALAFATE

3 nightsCALAFATE

Venturing further into the wilds of Patagonia, your next stop is Helsingfors, a comfortable boutique lodge in the Los Glaciares National Park. The lodge was named by its Finnish founder for his hometown of Helsinki, and you’d certainly be forgiven for forgetting you were in Latin America here – the ice fields and glaciers of this part of Patagonia are truly stunning. A bilingual guide will lead you on trips to the Viedma Glacier, while trout fishing, horseback riding and trekking are also on offer. This is a fantastic place to get a real taste for authentic gaucho life; after a day on horseback there’s nothing better to come back to than a hearty meal of Patagonian lamb, grilled on a traditional asado barbecue.

Iguazu

2 nightsIGUAZU

Your next stop, after a flight to Cataratas del Iguazu, will see you exploring one of the wonders of the natural world: the Iguazu Falls. One of the largest waterfall systems in the world, these huge columns of water cascade down a colossal step in the Iguazu River, on the border of Argentina and Brazil. You’ll stay within easy reach of the falls at La Cantera Jungle Lodge, a beautiful hotel surrounded by centuries-old cassia and rosewood forest. You can take your pick from a range of excursions to experience the falls, from standard  viewpoint treks to more adventurous boat trips on the river, allowing you to get up close to the mighty Devil’s Throat waterfall.

2 nightsSALTA

After two nights exploring the natural majesty of Iguazu, you’ll board another domestic flight to the lovely colonial city of Salta. This place is always a favourite with the purists when it comes to Argentine culture; its penas are alive with traditional folk music, the architecture dates back to the 1500s, and its fantastic museums document the region’s archaeology, colonial history and tobacco wealth, among other things. You’ll spend two nights at Legado Mitico Salta, a boutique hotel housed in an elegant townhouse. Salta is also the jumping-off point for adventures in the puna grasslands, and a visit to the multicoloured rock formations of the Quebrada de Humahuaca should be high on the agenda during your time here.

Next up, it’s a flight south to the city of Mendoza, the gateway to Argentina’s acclaimed wine country. You’ll have no end of opportunities to taste the region’s finest produce over the next few days, as you stay at Finca La Azul, a stylish boutique hotel surrounded by the vineyards of the Uco Valley. To accompany the wine, you’ll enjoy fantastic Spanish-Italian-Arabian fusion cuisine – cookery classes are on offer too – and a range of outdoor activities. The Uco Valley and the Andes Mountains beyond can be explored on foot, mountain bike or horseback, while adrenaline junkies will relish the opportunity to go paragliding in hills, with the Andes as the backdrop.

Pampas

2 nightsPAMPAS

The final stop on your Argentine adventure is in the plains of the Pampas and Estancia La Bandada, a traditional country estancia where you can experience life as it’s been lived for centuries by authentic gaucho cowboys. Needless to say, horse riding is a favourite activity here - you can learn to ride gaucho-style, and even help herd cattle on the estate.

There are also ample opportunities for walking and hiking in the grounds and surrounding countryside, guided birdwatching and fishing excursions, and polo lessons. Alternatively, you can see out your trip doing little more than lazing around the pool and enjoying authentic Argentine cuisine, with traditional asado barbecues a regular occurrence.
