This itinerary begins in the capital, Buenos Aires, where you’ll stay in the stylish former home of Hollywood great Francis Ford Coppola and enjoy a personalised concierge programme. Next, you’ll head to the unspoilt Valdes Peninsula, spotting whales, sea lions and sea birds on a semi-submersible submarine tour. Your final two stops, the Pampas lowlands and countryside of Ongamira, see you staying at traditional estancias and living the life of a gaucho cowboy, exploring pristine wilderness and spotting wildlife on horseback.
Perfect forFamilies looking to combine wildlife watching and adventure.
In the knowConsider spending more time in Argentina’s north-west, taking in the colonial city of Salta and the multicoloured valleys of the surrounding countryside.

Itinerary details

Buenos Aires

3 NIGHTSBUENOS AIRES

Your first stop is Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital and one of the most exciting cities in South America. You’ll spend three nights at Jardin Escondido, a stylish hotel and former home of Hollywood movie mogul Francis Ford Coppola. The real star of the show here is the hotel’s concierge, who will help you to arrange any number of fantastic activities in the city.

We’d recommend a tour to the Recoleta Cemetery, a remarkable necropolis almost like a town in its scale, full of beautiful, elaborate tombs; a typical Argentine parrilla barbecue is the perfect dinner after a day’s pounding the streets. Also recommended is a visit to La Bombonera, home to the iconic Boca Juniors football team.

3 NIGHTSVALDES PENINSULA

Leaving behind the urban chaos of Buenos Aires, you head to the coast and the unspoilt wilderness of the Valdes Peninsula. You’ll spend three nights at El Pedral Lodge, a coastal farmhouse hotel with a fantastic programme of activities to help you enjoy the region’s natural beauty. Boarding the hotel’s very own Yellow Submarine, you’ll head beneath the waves for underwater whale watching, spotting southern right whales as well as sea lions and various sea birds – the boat’s semi-submersible nature means you can flit above and below deck at will.

Other wildlife watching activities on offer here include trips to a colony of curious magellanic penguins, and a visit to an elephant seal rookery. Trips are led by expert naturalists and are both great fun and educational for kids and adults alike.

Pampas

2 NIGHTSPAMPAS

Next up, you’ll head back inland to the Pampas lowlands, a region of wildlife-rich plains outside Buenos Aires. Your home for the next two nights is Puesto Viejo, a country estancia and polo club where a range of outdoor activities are on offer. Of course, many of them revolve around horses: horseback rides and lessons are on offer to suit all experience and ability levels, and between September and May you can also watch polo matches at the club.

Birdwatching trips on the Pampas will give you the chance to spot churrinches, chimangos and various owls, while a full moon night ride, followed by a hearty barbecue, is a fantastically evocative experience.

Ongamira

4 NIGHTSONGAMIRA

The final stop on your family adventure is the province of Cordoba, where you’ll spend four nights at Dos Lunas, a traditional estancia hotel set in a hundred-year-old farmhouse. Surrounded by thousands of acres of unspoilt countryside, this is another place where horse riding is high on the agenda, with a range of guided excursions into the wilderness. These range from one-hour introductory rides to longer trips up the Cerro Colchequin, where you can spot eagles, condors and peregrine falcons against the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. Rides can be adapted to various difficulty levels, so are suitable for you and your kids regardless of experience.

If horse riding’s not your thing, trekking is an equally great way to explore the forests and caves of Ongamira.
