2 nightsLAS VEGAS

Your desert adventure begins in Las Vegas, the frenetic entertainment capital of the United States. While many people might not think of Vegas while planning their family holiday, it’s a fantastic family destination, with activities to suit parents and kids alike. Your hotel, the magnificent Mandarin Oriental, combines a fantastic location with the status of being one of the few hotels on the Strip not to have its own casino, meaning you won’t be overwhelmed by the crowds of gamblers who descend on the likes of the Bellagio. At the Adventuredome theme park, you can enjoy fairground style games or thrilling rollercoaster rides, while at Vegas Indoor Skydiving you can experience weightless freefall. There’s also the world’s highest Ferris wheel, the High Roller, and SlotZilla, which despite the name is not a fruit machine but the world’s first power-launched zip line.

2 nightsSEDONA

After a couple of days in Vegas, you’ll hit the road and drive for around four hours east to the desert town of Sedona. Surrounded by red sandstone buttes, canyons and mesas, Sedona is an unforgettable landscape to explore on foot or horseback, or by bike. Jeep, helicopter and hot air balloon tours are all great ways to take in the view, while you can get a feel for frontier life on a historic mining railway that has been taking people through the Verde River Canyon since 1911. You’ll spend two nights at the luxurious Enchantment Resort, which has everything you could wish for to help you make the most of your stay, including a world-class spa and delicious dining options.

3 nightsHAVASU FALLS

Your next three nights will be spent in the area around Havasu Falls, a stunning region around three hours north of Sedona where waterfalls cascade down the familiar red rocks. This is a real slice of desert adventure, as you’ll spend three days heli-backpacking around the waterfalls and sleeping under the stars. Beginning with a helicopter ride to the village of Supai, where the Havasupai people have lived for 800 years, you’ll then hike with your backpacks down past several waterfalls to the campground. Havasu means ‘blue-green water’, and you won’t find it hard to see why as you manoeuvre your way past these magnificent turquoise waterfalls; when you arrive at camp, you’ll enjoy delicious campfire cooking and a well-earned swim in the falls. The next few days will follow a similar pattern, taking in stunning hikes to the likes of Beaver Falls, Rock Falls and Carbonite Canyon.

3 nightsPAGE

After three days of hiking and sleeping under the stars in Havasu Falls, you’ll hit the road again towards your final destination, the town of Page and stunning desert resort of Amangiri. Right at the heart of the ‘Grand Circle’ of Southwestern National Parks, Amangiri is surrounded by desolate desert beauty and features expansive views from its uniquely designed, luxurious suites, which almost seem to blend in with the endless desert beyond. The Grand Staircase-Escalante region is one of the world’s richest regions for dinosaur bones, and a palaeontology expert can take you on an interactive excavation tour. There are also opportunities to learn about Native American culture with Navajo guides, from storytelling to ritual dances, and guided climbs and horseback rides are a great way to get to know your surroundings better. You can also pay a visit to resident artist Ulrike Arnold, who uses the rock and sand of the desert to create abstract masterpieces near ancient Native American petroglyphs. After a few days experiencing the desert in style at Amangiri, your adventure is at an end, and you’ll drive to Las Vegas for your flight home.
