Goulding's Lodge

Location: The American Southwest | USA

Price guide: £££££ £100-£200 per person per night

Set amidst the fiery lunar landscape of Monument Valley, Goulding’s Lodge is a laidback retreat rich in Navajo history and culture. On-site it has an interesting museum, a movie theatre and a restaurant and shop, all run by the local Navajo community.

The Gouldings first founded the lodge as a trading post to work with the local Navajo community. When the Great Depression hit, business ground almost to a halt and so Harry and Mike made for Hollywood to look for a solution. It was here that they persuaded John Ford that Monument Valley would be the perfect backdrop for his movies – a month later, Stagecoach was the first of many that would be filmed in the region, starring the locals too.
Perfect forAdventure seekers who are interested in Utah’s history.
In the knowThe lodge is involved with the Navajo community, and supports the tribal reserve. Take in the fascinating culture of the area and the lodge’s heritage from trading post to Hollywood film setting, and enjoy the museum and the movie theatre.
