Luxury Holidays to the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean island, with long stretches of coastline that are home to 250 miles of some of the world's most beautiful beaches, bordering the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the Caribbean Sea in the south, against a lush mountain backdrop.

From sunbathing to whale watching, it may tick all the boxes you would expect from the Caribbean, but is also one of its most diverse islands, with a wealth of natural wonders and a rich history and culture. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, take in a slice of the island's centuries of history by visiting the ruins of this legendary explorer's home in Puerto Plata, strolling through the colonial streets of the capital, Santo Domingo, venturing into cathedrals and shrines and dancing to the irresistible beat of the merengue.

And then there's feasting on delicious Dominican food, going snorkelling and diving, and exploring the scenic landscapes on epic adventures - and of course, relaxing on the beach. This is the Caribbean, after all...

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Beaches. Playa Rincon is one of the world's best beaches. Revel in three miles of pristine white sands dotted with coconut trees, fringing a turquoise bay, with seafront restaurants serving up the freshest of fish. Simply paradise.

Festivals. The Caribbean knows how to celebrate, and the Dominican Republic is no exception. Visit in February for Carnival, which represents the island's independence from Haiti in 1844. Festivities go on all month, with street parties and colourful celebrations, culminating in an all-night extravaganza. In the summer months of July and August, the Festival de Merengue celebrates the history of Dominican dance, where you party round the clock, refuelling at tempting street-food stalls.

Water sports. The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean's top spots for surfing, kite-surfing and windsurfing.
