Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

The surrounding area of Port Hardy is famed for its natural beauty, from the sea lions and whales which populate its coastline to the forests and mountains inland.

Rooms at Kwa'lilas Hotel

The 85 guestrooms and suites at Kwa’lilas are beautifully designed, combining a contemporary aesthetic with design touches which pay homage to Gwa’sala and Nakwaxda’xw First Nations culture. Beautiful wood carvings, in particular, recall totems and other expressions of Aboriginal art. Mountain View King Rooms overlook both the mountains and ocean of northern Vancouver Island.

Food & Drink

The restaurant mines both the traditions of First Nations cuisine and the bountiful coastline of the Pacific Northwest to serve up delicious, healthy dishes with an emphasis on seafood – try the house smoked tsa’pa salmon, the hearty y’usa noodle bowl and the smoked seafood chowder. If seafood isn’t your thing, don’t despair: a wide range of hearty meat dishes are on offer, like Canadian ribeye steak, rabbit and wild mushroom pie, and elk loin.

Facilities

A stay here is geared towards outdoor exploration in the wilderness of Vancouver Island, and the expertise of the staff will help you to arrange a rich, enjoyable itinerary.

Activities at Kwa'lilas Hotel

The in-house K’awat’si Tours offer an extensive programme of outdoor adventures and cultural activities which will help you learn more about First Nations communities. An exhilarating way to spend a morning is with a boat trip down the Nakwakto Rapids, while back on dry land a guided coach trip and hike will see you exploring the beautiful rock formations of San Josef Bay. Weekly sessions are held at the hotel with an elder from one of the region’s three indigenous Nations, involving traditional storytelling, history talks, and song and dance.
