East of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and north of St Maarten, Anguilla is one of the most northerly of the Leeward islands and is smaller than some of its Caribbean counterparts, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in luxurious hotels, gourmet restaurants and pure white, talcum powder sand on picture postcard beaches. The best beaches in the Caribbean? Probably.

Now attracting a salubrious crowd, Anguilla is exclusive, but still manages to retain much of its sleepy backwater charm, which it showcases to those who crave some serenity in this off-the-beaten-track Caribbean sanctuary. A luxury holiday in Anguilla is a great alternative to other busier Caribbean islands - but if you want the best of both worlds, the shops, bars and restaurants of St Maarten and St Barths aren't far away.

Glorious beaches. With 33 pristine white sand beaches to choose from, they never feel crowded. Shoal Bay is particularly beautiful: over a mile long and with a teeming reef off shore.

Fine dining. Anguilla has fantastic restaurants that fuse contemporary international cuisine with traditional local ingredients.

Diving in the Prickly Pear Cays. This underwater cavern is incredible for diving, with barracuda and nurse shark swimming through magnificent rock formations. Not far away there’s also a series of shipwrecks to explore.

Beach bar cabanas. Watching the sunset from one of Cap Jaluca’s three seat cabanas – rum punch in hand – is an absolute must.

Nesting turtles. From April to November, leatherback, green and hawksbill turtles can be seen laying their eggs on Anguilla’s beautiful beaches. After dark, watch them crawl onto the sand to nest and even see their offspring hatch.

Annual regattas are held throughout spring and summer with locals racing hand built boats. Enjoy barbecues, music and dancing as the races unfold.
